This triptych is the final project for a painting class I took this semester. My self-assigned prompt was to come to the canvas each time with no plan, and let each composition present itself to me. I learned to work loosely and reject preciousness. I ended up with three paintings that represent my interests in environ- mentalism, nature, play, and material. Each of these paintings are 42” by 70” — I enjoyed the process of making my own stretcher bars, stretching, and gessoing my canvases almost as much as paint- ing itself. I took this class to learn the technical skills of oil painting — I was rewarded with careful artistic mentorship, a tight-knit group of painters, and a mis- sion to remain a hobbyist painter for life.
